Sony PS2’s 21st birthday

The classic game console PS2 of Sony Computer Entertainment (now Sony interactive entertainment) celebrated its 21st birthday today. The console was put on sale in Japan on March 4, 2000. The main competitors at that time were Sega's Dreamcast, Microsoft's Xbox and Nintendo's GameCube. 10828 games have been launched on the PS2 platform. PS2 has a number of home game console records: the highest sales volume in history (157.68 million units), the longest sales time (12 years), and the longest official manufacturer support time (18 years).

Sony interactive entertainment announced on the official website of Japan on December 28, 2012, confirming the formal termination of PS2 sales. The cumulative global sales of PS2 exceeded 155 million units. Sony officially announced that the maintenance period of the main engine will end on August 31, 2018.
